Well, it all starts with effective leadership and execution of various Sales and Merchandising functions within the store. Functions / Responsibilities:

Customer Experience

  • Be friendly and helpful to customers by greeting them, thanking them, and offering assistance.
  • Resolve any conflicts or complaints from customers in a timely manner.
  • Make sure your team understands and follows the company's customer experience initiatives.
  • Create action plans based on customer experience reports to improve the overall experience.
  • Ensure that all associates are dressed appropriately according to company standards.
  • Make sure your team has the necessary skills and product knowledge to provide excellent customer service.
  • Build relationships with customers and focus on fulfilling their needs.
  • Ensure that service levels are top-notch in your area of responsibility.

Inventory Management

  • Work with the category team to keep track of stock levels and turnover.
  • Follow up on repairs and returns to ensure they are processed in a timely manner.
  • Stay in touch with suppliers for special promotions and other important matters.
  • Maintain core stock and promotional lines according to company standards.
  • Monitor stock replenishment and integrity through the gap scanning process.
  • Analyze SAP CAR reports and come up with strategies to improve store performance.
  • Take action on aged or obsolete stock according to company procedures.

Merchandise and Marketing

  • Implement signage standards as outlined in the Signage Manual.
  • Keep store displays updated according to company standards.
  • Create visual displays to promote new products, local events, and seasonal themes.
  • Coordinate with the merchandise team to replenish stock from the distribution areas to the sales floor.
  • Ensure that stock is displayed correctly with the right labels, barcodes, and prices.
  • Implement the latest version of space planning and update "out of stock" items through gap scanning.

Stock Loss

  • Follow all policies and procedures to minimize stock loss.
  • Secure merchandise according to relevant security measures.
  • Maintain stock integrity and adhere to high-risk policy and procedures.
  • Review high-risk schedules and report any discrepancies.
  • Conduct stock take post mortem action plans.
  • Manage adhoc modular counts as required by the company.


  • Ensure that all expenses are within the budget, including scheduling, overtime, auction costs, and more.
  • Effectively manage TK records, such as schedules, leave types, clockings, and audit trails.
  • Follow company procedures for mark down and swell allowances.
  • Manage auction costs according to company procedures.


  • Communicate daily sales targets to associates.
  • Keep everyone aware of sales performance to positively impact the weekly target.
  • Review Floor Managers' performance using the weekly sales performance report.
  • Support, coach, and motivate your team to exceed sales targets.
  • Follow up on call back vouchers daily.
  • Plan and coordinate in-store promotional activities.
  • Analyze market trends and their impact on sales.


  • Continuously enhance your skills and develop new ones.
  • Ensure that all associates receive regular training to meet the required standards.
  • Coach and develop your team to achieve store standards.
  • Complete the Individual Development Training Pack (IDTP) for your team and have regular one-on-one conversations.
  • Adhere to the performance improvement process (PIP).
  • Follow company requirements for onboarding new associates.
  • Understand the disciplinary investigation and hearing processes.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process of associates.
  • Promote collaboration between teams.
  • Act with integrity, provide excellent service, strive for excellence, and respect others.
  • Achieve win-win outcomes when resources are limited.


  • Create and implement daily work plans.
  • Maintain compliance with OHASA, stock loss, and Massmart audits.
  • Ensure optimal service levels by scheduling according to peaks and valleys.
  • Maintain overall cleanliness and maintenance standards in the store.
  • Stay updated on Store Operations communication.
  • Conduct Management By Walk About (MBWA).
  • Be supportive, flexible, and assist with duties outside of your position when needed.


If you're interested in pursuing a career in this field, here are the minimum qualifications and experience required:

  • High school diploma (Matric)
  • Relevant tertiary qualification is a plus
  • 3 years of retail experience
